In the fast-paced design world, where creativity meets functionality, Simon Sinek’s concept of “Why” offers a profound way to start any project. For designers, understanding and articulating the purpose behind their work can lead to more inspired and meaningful creations.

“Why” in Design Practice

The W.H.Y is often referred to as your purpose, your mission, your mission statement or your raison d’être – the very reason for your existence. I have placed some questions I use when I receive a brief from my clients.

  • Why is this project important to you and your business?
    • This question helps understand the core motivation behind the project and its significance to the client’s business.
  • Why do you believe graphic design will help you achieve your goals?
    • This question explores the client’s belief in the power of graphic design and what they expect it to achieve.
  • Why have you chosen now to undertake this project?
    • This question identifies the urgency or timing behind the project, and understanding any external or internal factors driving the need for design work now.

The “W.hy” represents the core reason behind a designer’s work – the mission and vision that drive every project. By clarifying this purpose, designers can infuse their work with passion and authenticity, which resonates deeply with clients and audiences. This foundation of purpose not only guides creative decisions but also establishes a stronger connection with those who experience the design.

Incorporating “Why” into your design practice can transform your approach, leading to more innovative and impactful outcomes. It helps in crafting stories and experiences that go beyond mere aesthetics, creating designs that truly matter.
