The Dyslexic Designer: Thriving in a Creative Career

In this post, I’ll share my journey as a dyslexic designer thriving in a creative career. Dyslexia has provided me with a unique perspective that enhances my creativity and problem-solving abilities. These skills are highly valued in the design industry.

By focusing on my strengths and using assistive technology, I’ve been able to overcome challenges and achieve success. For example, text-to-speech software, Grammarly and other assistive tools have made it easier for me to manage tasks that involve reading and writing, allowing me to focus more on my creative work.

One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is the value of self-advocacy. Understanding my own needs and communicating them to colleagues and clients has been crucial in creating a work environment that allows me to thrive. This includes asking for additional time on tasks that require extensive reading or writing and seeking out opportunities to showcase my visual and creative strengths. Also being open, let your colleague know you having a slower day. I found out that sleep affects my dyslectic.

Networking and building relationships within the industry have also been key factors in my success. Connecting with other dyslexic designers and sharing our experiences has provided valuable insights and support. These connections have also opened up opportunities for collaboration and career advancement.

Dyslexia is not a hindrance but a unique advantage that can lead to a fulfilling and successful career in design. By embracing my dyslexia and focusing on my strengths, I’ve been able to carve out a niche for myself in the creative industry. So If I can do it, you can do it
